n. [Gr. ektos, outside; ostrakon, shell]
(ARTHROPODA: Chelicerata)
1. In acarology, the outermost layer of the chitonostracum layer that when sclerotized is normally colored; stains with acid dyes; see chitonostracum.
2. The middle layer of integument of arachnids.
